“Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.” – Tennessee Williams
Friendship Day 2021: what an awful lot of commotion. There is no way this is actually important, is it?
International Friendship Day is usually celebrated towards the end of July in many parts of the world. In India though, it is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. For a lot of people, it is a big deal. Let me tell you why.
The relationship between you and your best friend is most often indescribable. Sometimes a label does no justice.
Tell me this: the first time you and your best friend first met, was it a bond over a mutual you hated? Or was it the same taste in R&B; an exhausted “pop is too mainstream, yaar.” Followed by an enthusiastic “I know, right?!”
Fast forward to now, bickering for the last piece of chicken in the biryani packet and teaching each other Physics right before the final exam. There is nothing you could give this up for.
You need a ‘Best Friend Day’ because you see pieces of them in every new person you meet. They will always be the first person you want to share new things with.
You know exactly how they take their coffee, and you remember to pick tomatoes out of their sandwiches.
They will be your partner-in-crime to pull a prank on someone. They will be your ally you can rely on when things go south.
They can be your critic when you ask for an opinion. Most importantly, they are undeniably fun!
In contrast to family, friendship can happen in the blink of an eye – anywhere, anytime, and with anyone. But the one we call friends will stay with us forever.
But such close bonds are not formed in the blink of an eye. It takes time and patience. So many of us struggle to meet the right people and develop quality connections that last more than talking about the weather. No matter your age or how busy your schedule is, though, it’s never too late to make new friends, have a reunion with old ones, simply to and improve your social life and emotional health.
it is all the more reason to appreciate the friends you have!
Did you know, this trademark holiday was not created simply as a marketing strategy by major firms! The celebration of this special bond dates back to the times of the Mahabharata, circa 4th century CE. The joy Sudama gave Lord Krishna after the brahmin’s long and arduous journey simply to meet the prince was priceless! Lord Krishna had to commemorate his bliss, and so this festivity was born.
Since this seems to be in the blood and bones of our Indian history, it is only fair to treat it with the same love we give to all our other traditions.
But this time, why not add a little twist? After all, if you are going to celebrate the bond you have with someone, do it with style!
